Understanding Commercial Parasols

As discussed on Google Arts & Culture, parasols are commonly made from delicate fabrics such as lace, cotton, silk, linen, canvas, and plastic. These are primarily used for protection from exposure to the sun. In various cultures, it means protection, prosperity, royalty, power, shelter, prestige and style.

At Shade Specialists, we classify this incredible outdoor decor item into two main types: commercial parasols and residential parasols. Want to know what makes commercial parasols so special? This article has all the details regarding their sizes, shapes, materials, and more.

Commercial parasols are perfect for restaurants, pubs, wine gardens, golf clubs, cafes, pools, etc., that want architectural elegance and cosy outdoor nooks and spaces. Our parasols can provide the best customer experience all-year round. For colourful decor, ambience, and seasonal adaptability, choose your commercial parasols at Shade Specialists.

Differences between our commercial and residential parasols

Commercial and residential parasols differ in several aspects:

  • Sizes:

Commercial parasols are usually bigger than residential ones. They work best for gigantic spaces, like outdoor restaurants or outdoor lounge seating areas.

In contrast, a residential parasol is perfect for smaller spaces, such home patios, gardens, terraces, swimming pools etc.

  • Durability and quality:

Just think about how often you'll be using the parasol in your outdoor area. Commercial parasols are made for frequent and intensive use. They're made to last in many weather conditions and for everyday use.

Residential parasols are typically used less intensively. They're still tough and long-lasting, and can actually still be used in a smaller commercial setting.

  • Design and aesthetics:

Residential parasols are often chosen based on whatever will look good in their outdoor space. These parasols are available in different attractive colours and shapes to complement the exterior decor of houses.

Commercial parasols’ main focus is functionality, and not just about aesthetics. You can also customise them to match your branding and project needs.

  • Mechanism and functionality:

Big umbrellas for businesses have better mechanisms to open and close since they're used a lot and also their sizes. Besides that, these parasols also come with built-in lights along the ribs of the parasol, should the customer wish to have them. Wiring is also internal for a more stream-lined and tidy effect.

You can't get those features with a regular parasol, and you'll have to buy the accessories separately. Wiring is also not internal.

  • Cost:

Due to the size, durability, and possibilities for bespoke customisation, these parasols for businesses might require you to spend more than its counterpart used for personal home use.

  • Mobility and installation:

Home patio parasols are made to be easily moved, stored and require minimal upkeep. However, large parasols for businesses can be permanently installed or have heavier portable bases, but they're a bit more complicated to set up, so you'll need professional support.

Types of Commercial Parasols

Centre pole parasols

Businesses need shade for their outdoor spaces, no matter how big or small. To create a usable and comfortable outdoor space, you need a sturdy shade structure. You can add lots of small umbrellas or one large centre pole parasol.

  • Small centre pole umbrellas

If your business has a small patio or balcony, you'll need shading solutions that don't take up too much space. This is where these parasols add to your exterior style. Using a big parasol in small spaces can make it feel cramped and blocked, ruining the experience.

Small parasols are made specifically for situations like this. They're small but still give enough shade, so the area stays open and accessible. You can easily open, close, and move them, making them great for all kinds of small-scale settings. These commercial table umbrellas add a pleasant touch to your outdoor décor.

These small-sized centre-pole umbrellas are ideal for small garden spots, patios, balconies, pool sides, or cosy café corners with limited space.

  • Large centre pole parasols

For bigger outdoor areas, like patios or restaurant dining spots, you need a shading solution that covers more space and looks stylish.

If you are thinking of small parasols in large spaces, according to us, it is not usually recommended. They will still give enough shade, but it stays limited. You'll have to use multiple smaller sized commercial parasols for restaurants and it becomes a hassle. Your outdoor space could get cluttered and further need more investment and maintenance.

For this reason, large centre pole commercial umbrellas are favourable. These parasols let you ditch the need for multiple ones. They cover a lot of ground and provide tons of shade, keeping large outdoor areas cool and comfy. Their strong design guarantees stability, even in windy conditions, making them a trustworthy choice for open spaces.

Our large centre-pole UV protection parasol

The simple design makes them easy to use and compatible with various outdoor furniture styles. The visual appeal of these parasols can elevate any setting, whether it's a wedding venue or a wellness retreat destination.

Ideal for commercial environments such as restaurant patios, expansive gardens, golf club dining areas, or any open-air venue seeking ample shade and a touch of sophistication.

Cantilever parasols

Traditional parasols can obstruct the view or get in the way, especially in an alfresco dining or lounging area. There's often a need for shade that doesn't compromise the layout or aesthetics of the space. If you go with a small centre pole parasol, you'll have to keep adjusting to avoid the pole and that's not enjoyable or convenient.

Cantilever parasols are a classy option. These umbrellas give shade without disrupting the area underneath. They're just what you need if you’re looking for commercial umbrellas for pools, outdoor dining tables, or lounge areas. The canopy can move and tilt, making your outdoor space more fun.

Canopy Fabrics

Commercial parasols aren't just for staying safe from the weather, they're vibrant extensions of your brand that create an outdoor haven. The canopy fabrics are a total game-changer with their vibrant colours and awesome shade-giving abilities.

What really attracts the eyes towards our parasols is the canopy fabric type and colour. Make sure to choose the right colour, quality fabric, ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) and if needed, replacement canopies (don't worry, ours won't fade easily).

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor), indicates the fraction of the sun's ultraviolet rays that penetrate fabric. For example, a material with a UPF of 50, allows just 1/50th of the sun's UV radiation to reach your skin.

The selective canopies we use at Shade Specialists are top-notch and hand-picked to match your requirements. Whether you want bold colours, maximum UV protection, or just something that won't get ruined by water, dust, and dirt, we have it all.

The following are the different canopy fabrics that make our commercial parasols for restaurants a must-have. You can pick whichever one you like that fits within your budget and project requirements.

Polyester Canopy Material

A canopy material that is highly resistant to creasing and keeps its shape perfectly when opened. The solution-dying makes the polyester canopy resistant to fading. It is piece dyed, which means the thread is only coloured on the outside, like a radish!

Suitable for those businesses looking for budget-friendly alternatives. The polyester covers come in two natural colours – Beige and Ecru with up to 1 year of guarantee.

This canopy cover is perfect for usage in pool sides, outdoor weddings, festivals, market stalls, cafes, and restaurants on a tight budget.

Spuncrylic® Parasol Cover Material

The Spuncrylic® parasol cover has become the go-to choice for hotels, restaurants, and hospitality establishments. No need to worry about it fading, staining, or getting wet - it can resist all of them. Long story short, this canopy is both affordable and weatherproof, offering a UPF of 50.

You have the option to select from 10+ eye-catching colours, all with a 3-year guarantee.

Since this canopy material is of highly resistant nature, we recommend usage in hotel patios, outdoor seating for cafes and restaurants, public parks and picnic areas, outdoor events and weddings, and in golf courses or clubs.

Recasens RECacril® Canopy Material

Recasens RECacril® is the best acrylic fabric you can select as your canopy material. It guarantees the best water resistance and sun protection. It also comes with long-lasting protection against mould, plus excellent water and oil repellency.

This canopy is used extensively in the boating and marine industries for its strength and durability, offering a UPF of 80, according to the International Standard UV 801.

Lastly, this canopy is great for businesses that need UV protection because it filters out more UV radiation.

Ferrari 502 PVC Vinyl®

Ferrari 502 PVC Vinyl is a highly resistant membrane designed to last for many years. Highly protective against both bad weather and UV radiation.

This water-resistant canopy material is available in over 40 colours and requires low maintenance with its reinforced dirt resistance. You can only get this canopy with the Bambrella Hurricane Extreme parasol.

Functional Features

Parasol size and shape considerations

It's a head-scratcher to pick the right parasol shape and size that goes with your outdoor setting. You have the option to pick commercial grade parasols in sizes from 2m to 7m, and they come in various shapes like round, square, or rectangle.

The size and shape of your parasol are key to creating the perfect atmosphere in your commercial space. These considerations not only affect how your outdoor area will look, but also how comfortable your customers will be.

Don't worry, we'll help you understand which shape and size are best for you. Let's jump right in.

What to consider when selecting the parasol size?

Your parasol needs to be the right size to give you enough shade and match your outdoor setup. Take note of these important things:

  • Area to be shaded:

Start by checking out the exact spot you want to shade. Is it for dining, relaxing, or chilling by the pool? Your parasol selection depends on how big this space is.

If you want a large area to be shaded, a large centre pole parasol is recommended. And if you're looking for a few spots to be shaded, consider adding small to midsize parasols.

  • Table size

If you're placing your parasol over a dining table, make sure it's bigger than the table and chairs so it shades everyone. We recommend ensuring the parasol is at least 2 feet wider than your table.

  • Space Constraints

Consider the available space around your outdoor furniture. Ensure there's enough room for people to move around comfortably without the parasol creating a ‘cramped’ environment.

  • Sun's Angle:

If you're in a sunny spot, you might want to choose a bigger parasol for more shade.

What to consider when selecting the parasol shape?

The design of your parasol really adds to how it looks and works. Here are some things to consider before selecting the shape of your parasol canopy:

  • Furniture shape

When the parasol is placed over some furniture, be it lounge chairs, tables, sofas, or other outdoor furniture, consider it to match the shape of the proposed canopy.

For example, a round parasol is best when placed over a round table. Likewise, a rectangular parasol is best when placed over a rectangular dining table.

  • Aesthetic preferences

Consider your personal taste and style. Different shapes can enhance different design themes.

For example, round parasols are all about that classic and timeless style, while square or rectangular ones are more modern and clean-cut.

  • Placement of parasols

When you're deciding where to place your commercial grade parasols outside, keep in mind how the shape can affect shade and where the sun might shine through.

Round parasols, when put close together, can have little gaps between them because of their curved edges. Sunlight can filter through these gaps, especially at certain times of the day.

On the other hand, commercial square or rectangular umbrellas have straight edges that fit together perfectly when placed side by side. This feature makes shading easier and smoother. When you line up square or rectangular parasols, their edges do a good job of keeping sunlight out of the gaps.

Parasol operating systems for easy opening and closing of the canopy

Using your parasol should be a simple and secure process. There are various systems, each with its own pros and cons, depending on the manufacturers and the parasol design itself. Some even have the tilting function. The three most common are:

Double pulley and rope system

This is the simplest opening system in a parasol. Mostly found in small centre pole umbrellas. It's designed with a hub and uses a marine grade rope to open. All you have to do is pull one end of the rope and push the frame up until the canopy is fully open and stretched.

Just clamp it or use a pin to keep the hub from sliding down. To close it, just take out the pin or untie the rope and pull the other end until the umbrella folds up.

Winch with crank handle

You can usually find this system on commercial parasols that have a tilting option on the pole. Rotate the handle to the right to unfold the canopy. To close the umbrella, rotate counterclockwise.

To tilt it, there's an extra rope that'll help you get the canopy at the angle you want. Bambrella cantilever parasols usually have this system.

Push up system

Just like a regular umbrella, this system comes with a spring. Just push the hub and runner until you hear the 'click' and it's locked. Just press the release button and watch the canopy fold.

Commercial Parasol Bases and Fixation

The lower section of the parasol is called the commercial parasol base, which keeps it stable and helps it withstand strong winds. Depending on whether you want a centre pole or cantilever model, you can choose from various sizes and materials for your commercial umbrella.

You can choose from granite, concrete, or plastic base filled with water or sand. Before you make up your mind, ask yourself if the position is going to be permanent or portable?

  • Permanent parasol fixation

For this setup, we'll use the strongest option: an in-ground commercial parasol base. Ask the team for full instructions on how to install it.

  • Non-permanent parasol fixation

These commercial parasol bases can come with caster wheels and weigh 25 kg upwards. The weight depends on whether the parasol is centred on the patio table or designed as a plate to go under a deck.

Material Sides

Parasol Protection Covers

It's super important for a hospitality business to keep their commercial grade umbrellas looking and working perfectly. Parasol protection covers preserve the appearance of your investment by shielding it from the elements. When you're not using it, just cover the canopy and it'll last for ages.

Rain Guttering

If it starts pouring and you don't want your guests to run for cover, parasol rain guttering is the way to go. Guests stay dry and comfortable as it diverts rainwater from the seating area. By demonstrating such foresight and hospitality, you can generate word-of-mouth referrals and boost customer visits.

Final conclusions

Now that we've discussed the main features of our products, ranging from small garden umbrellas to large commercial parasols for restaurants, it's crucial to address some important questions that greatly impact your final buying choice.

What makes a good parasol?

  • Withstanding elements

Wind resistance is the most crucial factor, along with water, high temperatures, and dust. If your area is windy, it's important to have a parasol that can withstand it.

  • Longevity

The durability of the parasol is affected by the quality of the materials used (using a protective cover ensures its safety).

  • Usability

It needs to be both easy to install and easy to operate. If you opt for a temporary location and anticipate relocating it, think about using a commercial parasol base equipped with wheels.

  • Features and accessories

Ensure your parasol remains useful throughout the day and every season with heaters, lights, and many more accessories.

How much wind can a commercial parasol handle?

Bambrella engineers conducted wind tunnel tests on their Hurricane Extreme windproof parasol, reaching a speed of 125 km/h or 12 on the Beaufort Wind Force Scale. In this controlled environment, the wind consistently blows from one side without any unexpected changes in direction or intensity, unlike in nature.

Additional anchoring was added to the heavy-duty base of the parasol for this test. Regular parasols are generally weaker, usually measuring around 4-5 (35 km/h) on the Beaufort Scale.

(*) Keeping the commercial parasol open during high winds is discouraged and we strongly recommend collapsing the canopy and storing the parasol in its protective cover when not in use.
